Brake Safety Week – August 22 to 28, 2021

Commercial motor vehicle inspectors conduct brake system inspections (mainly Level IV Inspections) on large trucks and buses around North America during Brake Safety Week to identify brake system violations.

A properly working brake system is critical for the safe operation of commercial motor vehicles. Commercial motor vehicle brakes are built to withstand harsh conditions; yet, they must be tested and maintained carefully and consistently to ensure that they operate and perform effectively throughout the vehicle’s life.

Brake violations account for the majority of out-of-service violations cited during roadside inspections. Inadequately installed or maintained brake systems can significantly lower the braking capacity and stopping distance of trucks and buses, posing a substantial risk to the driver and public safety.
