This Friday morning, around 2 am incident occurred involving a UPS truck on Interstate -90, two miles east of Calumet Avenue in Hammond, Indiana, near the Chicago border.

Marc A. Rupert Sr., 32, of Lansing, Illinois, while driving a UPS tractor with an empty trailer in the left westbound lane of I-90 when his rig left the lane and struck the center median. The rig went over the wall and fell off the Calumet River bridge.

“The trailer remained perpendicular, hanging off the bridge in between the east and westbound lanes”, stated the Indiana State Police.

Shortly after the crash, The Indiana State Police department shared the images with media, captured by Nextstar’s WGN.

Witnesses were scared of the possibility that the driver could fall into the river while being stuck in the cab. Therefore, Hammond Fire and SCUBA arrived at the scene shortly after the call. Some witnesses said the driver was hanging off the bridge support near the pillar.

According to UPS, the driver was finally safe and transferred to St. Catherine’s Hospital. Immediately he received medical care. After that, they released him from the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

As a result of the accident, the whole traffic stopped completely. Therefore. only one lane was open for emergency workers. They brought a crane in order to remove the truck from the bridge. The crane pulled out the stuck trailer and the cab from the water.

The eastbound lanes reopened around 12 p.m., according to the Indiana State Police department. The westbound traffic stayed limited to one lane due to the investigation and the evaluation of the bridge damage.

Indiana State Police also stated that the cause of the crash is still under investigation.
