Witness a shocking car accident as a video from Georgia captures a car soaring through the air after launching off the ramp of a tow truck while traveling at a high rate of speed. The incident, which occurred on May 24, was caught on bodycam footage as deputies from the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office responded to a crash scene on Highway 84 in the southern part of the state.

The video begins with police standing beside a flipped-over vehicle on one side of the highway’s center median. As a deputy walks towards the wreck, a car comes into view, speeding towards a tow truck parked on the other side of the highway.

In a jaw-dropping moment, the car launches itself off the lowered ramp of the tow truck, soaring through the air before finally coming to a stop in an upright position. The deputy immediately sprints towards the vehicle, calling for EMS assistance. Debris from the accident is scattered across the highway, adding to the chaos.

According to the Georgia State Patrol and WSB-TV reports, the driver involved in this car accident survived but was hospitalized with serious injuries. The police incident report states that the car “vaulted” around 120 feet over the tow truck after launching off its ramp. Upon landing, it collided with another vehicle traveling on the highway, which was thrown a further 23 feet after impact, as indicated in the Georgia State Patrol incident report cited by WSB-TV.

Tragically, a Lowndes County sheriff’s deputy was also injured by debris from the accident and was taken to a local hospital. The cause of the initial accident that led to the police response remains unclear, and it is uncertain whether the driver of the second vehicle involved will face any charges.

Deputies from Fox5 Atlanta emphasize that this car accident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of abiding by Georgia’s Move Over Law. The law requires motorists traveling in the lane adjacent to the shoulder to move over one lane when emergency and utility vehicles are stopped on the side of the highway and operating in an official capacity.

The Move Over Law includes all first responders, such as law enforcement, fire, EMS, utility vehicles, DOT vehicles, HERO Units, and wreckers attending to an accident. Its primary purpose is to ensure the safety of both officers and traffic violators, protecting them from crashes with passing cars. The Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety website describes the law as a response to the increasing numbers of police, emergency technicians, and DOT workers being killed during routine traffic stops, crash responses, and highway construction projects nationwide.

Violators of the Move Over Law can face citations with fines of up to $500, according to Fox5 Atlanta.

In conclusion, the shocking car accident involving a tow truck ramp launch serves as a stark reminder of the dangers on the highway. It highlights the importance of obeying traffic laws, such as Georgia’s Move Over Law, to ensure the safety of both emergency responders and motorists alike.
